The Hogback Fire was last estimated at about 40 acres.
JEFFERSON COUNTY, Colo. — A wildfire reported Friday afternoon around 2:15 p.m. along the hogback south of Interstate 70 west of Denver was estimated at 40 acres Friday evening, West Metro Fire Rescue (WMFR) said.
Pre-evacuations notices were issued to the following areas Friday afternoon:
- The town of Morrison
- The Solterra Subdivision of Lakewood
- The Red Rock Ranch neighborhood at C-470
All of the pre-evacuation notices were lifted by 8:30 p.m Friday. Rooney Road from Colfax to Thunder Valley is back open as of 9:45 a.m. Saturday, according to West Metro Fire.
Highways 93, 26 and hiking trails on Hogback remain closed.
Containment remained at 0% as of Friday night. WMFR said crews will work on containment throughout Saturday.
The fire was moving from near Alameda Avenue and C-470 to the southeast, WMFR said. The agency shared a video they said was from the west side of the hogback, which was where the fire started and was pushed up the slope and over the top of the ridge by the winds.
Rhonda Scholting, spokeswoman for WMFR, said conditions were brutal.
“Imagine fighting a fire when you can barely stand up,” she said.
She also said that a helicopter was on standby for air support but it couldn’t fly in the high winds.
A Dabin concert scheduled for Friday evening at Red Rocks was postponed. The music venue said a new date has not been determined, and that AEG will send out more information to those who have tickets to the show.
Red Flag warnings were in effect due to strong winds that could spread the fire quickly. West Metro Fire Rescue said in a tweet that extra resources were being called to assist with the fire.
West Metro said the fire was caused by an electrical wire that was brought down by the wind on the west side of the hogback.
A second fire was reported in Aurora near Parker Road and Chambers Road around 3:15 p.m., according to Aurora Fire Rescue (AFR). Vegetation and a bridge in the open space burned and no structures caught fire, according to AFR.
That fire was contained at 3 acres just before 4:30 p.m.
