DENVER — Evacuation orders have been lifted as firefighters battled a five-acre wildland fire in Colorado Springs Sunday night.
The fire, which was burning in Cimarron Hills near Peterson Air Force Base, had forced the evacuation of several nearby homes earlier Sunday.
A pre-evacuation notice for residents within a two-mile radius of the fire had been lifted just after 4 p.m.
Cimarron Hills Fire Department said on Twitter Sunday night that the fire was 90% contained and no structures were damaged.
Peterson/Galley Fire update:
90% contained. Total acres impacted (update) – 5.4
No structures damaged, no injuries. Crews monitoring throughout the night. Further updates will be released tomorrow morning.— Cimarron Hills FD (@CimHillsFD) April 3, 2023
The fire broke out Sunday afternoon near Newt Drive and Highway 24 in Cimarron Hills, an unincorporated El Paso County community a couple of miles northeast of Peterson AFB.
The Colorado Springs Fire Department was assisting Cimarron Hills Fire and said heavy fuels were involved.
The area, along with most of the Front Range, was under a red flag warning for high winds and low relative humidity.
Firefighters across the state are battling four other wildfires that started in the last couple of days amid high winds and dry conditions.
